In 2008, ZAFOD established the Advancing Disability Equality Project (ADEPt) with support from the Irish Aid through Power4Good Ireland. The support from Irish Aid came to an end in June 2010 after which ADEPt managed to source support from the Embassy of Finland in Zambia. The Embassy of Finland agreed to support the project for one year. ADEPt is a human rights project with the aim of establishing principles and precedents that would ensure the protection and promotion of the rights and fundamental freedoms of persons with disabilities mainly through casework and litigation. In the first three years, the project focused on handling cases of human rights violations against persons with disabilities in Lusaka province. With the support from the Embassy of Finland, the project was expanded to two other provinces of Zambia namely Western and North Western provinces.

NEW GOVERNMENT IN ACTION
By: Wamundila Waliuya
The Government of the Republic of Zambia, led by His Excellency, Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata has directed that the Persons with Disabilities Act of 1996 be amended within 30 days in order to make it conform to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Community Development, Mothers and Child Health gave the directive in an internal meeting within the ministry. The ministry staff are now busy visiting Disabled People’s Organisations to get any necessary data for the purpose of reviewing the law.
The Permanent Secretary further advised the consultant hired to review all relevant laws for the purpose of aligning them to the UNCRPD to start with the Persons with Disabilities Act.
